Tragedy struck in Cross River State as a commander of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) was found dead in a hotel room in Calabar.
According to reports, the senior officer had checked into the hotel on Sunday evening but was later discovered lifeless by staff who raised the alarm. Police authorities and NDLEA officials have since cordoned off the area as investigations begin into the circumstances surrounding his sudden death.
Confirming the incident, the Cross River State Police Command said preliminary findings are underway.
“We received a distress call from the hotel management, and our operatives immediately moved to the scene. The body has been recovered, and an autopsy will be conducted to ascertain the actual cause of death,” a police spokesperson stated.
The NDLEA headquarters has also reacted to the shocking development, describing the loss as a heavy blow to the agency.
“We mourn the death of one of our gallant commanders in Calabar. Investigations are ongoing, and we urge the public to disregard speculations until facts are established,” an NDLEA official noted.
The news has sparked widespread concern among residents of Calabar, with many calling for transparency in the probe. Human rights advocates have also urged authorities to rule out foul play, stressing the need for a thorough and credible investigation.
The late commander was reportedly active in several recent operations targeting drug cartels in the South-South region, raising questions about possible threats linked to his work.
As investigations continue, both the NDLEA and the police have assured the public that the circumstances leading to his death will be fully uncovered.
