New York Governor Kathy Hochul has officially thrown her support behind Zohran Mamdani in the upcoming New York City mayoral race, marking a significant shake-up in the state’s political landscape.
In a joint statement and accompanying op-ed in The New York Times, Hochul praised Mamdani’s “courage, urgency, and optimism,” highlighting his grassroots organizing background and bold policy vision as key reasons for her endorsement. “He’s not afraid to take on the status quo,” Hochul wrote, adding that while they’ve had policy differences in the past, she believes Mamdani is uniquely equipped to lead the city at a time of deep challenges and transformation.
Zohran Mamdani, a State Assembly member representing parts of Queens, has built his campaign on progressive priorities including affordable housing, police accountability, and expanding public transit access. His appeal among younger, left-leaning voters has made him a rising star within the Democratic Party.
Hochul’s endorsement is seen as a strategic move to bridge the divide between the party’s centrist and progressive wings. It also comes at a time when Mamdani’s campaign is gaining momentum, bolstered by endorsements from several labor unions and community groups.
The announcement is likely to apply pressure on other prominent Democrats — including Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and NYC Council Speaker Adrienne Adams — to take public stances in what is shaping up to be one of the most watched mayoral races in the country.
Mamdani responded to the endorsement on X (formerly Twitter), calling it a “profound honor” and vowing to build a New York that works for all its residents.
The primary election is expected in mid-2026, with Mamdani now considered a front-runner thanks to this high-profile endorsement.
