Police detectives in Ondo State have successfully rescued a 15-year-old girl from being forced into marriage with a 52-year-old man in Idoani, Ose Local Government Area. The incident has sparked outrage across the state, drawing renewed attention to the fight against child marriage in Nigeria.
According to reports, a vigilant community leader alerted security operatives about the planned wedding. Acting swiftly, detectives stormed the venue and rescued the teenager, who was immediately taken to the Reference Hospital in Akure for medical examination and care.
Meanwhile, police sources confirmed the arrest of the intended groom, identified as Asere Sunday, popularly called Santo. Also taken into custody were his 22-year-old son, Asere Kehinde, and the victim’s father, Ayoola Sunday, who allegedly collected money in exchange for his daughter.
During interrogation, the would-be groom admitted to arranging the marriage and confessed to offering financial inducement to the girl’s father. However, the father defended his actions, claiming poverty drove him to make the decision.
“I had no choice; life has been difficult,” he reportedly said.
Transitioning to the community response, intelligence reports revealed that local youths had already mobilized to resist the marriage. Tensions were reportedly rising, and a violent clash was imminent before the police intervened to restore order.
Reacting to the case, the Commissioner of Police in Ondo State, Adebowale Lawal, strongly condemned the act, describing it as a gross violation of child rights.
In his words, “The Command will not tolerate child marriage, gender-based violence, or any form of exploitation. Parents must protect their children instead of trading their future for money.”
Furthermore, CP Lawal assured the public that the suspects remain in custody and will face prosecution. He emphasized that the case would serve as a deterrent to others considering similar acts of abuse and exploitation.
Tthe swift intervention of the police not only prevented an unlawful marriage but also reinforced the need for vigilance, community action, and strict enforcement of laws protecting children in Nigeria.
