As preparations intensify for its forthcoming national convention, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has drawn a clear battle line with loyalists of former Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike. The development signals deepening internal struggles within the main opposition party.
Party insiders revealed that the leadership is determined to assert its authority and prevent any single faction from dominating the convention.
According to a top PDP official, “This convention will not be business as usual. The party is bigger than any individual or group, and we are ready to ensure that the process remains transparent and democratic.”
Meanwhile, Wike’s camp has continued to demand greater influence in the affairs of the party. Supporters argue that their leader’s contributions to PDP, particularly during the 2023 general elections, cannot be overlooked. One of his allies stressed, “Governor Wike stood by this party when many had abandoned it. He deserves respect and recognition, not exclusion.”
However, PDP leaders insist that unity and discipline must take precedence over personal interests. They argue that the party cannot afford further division, especially with the 2027 elections gradually approaching. Transitioning from internal wrangling to electoral realities, another party chieftain explained, “We must come out of this convention stronger. The people are looking up to us as a credible alternative to the ruling party, and we cannot disappoint them.”
Observers believe the convention will serve as a test of strength between the PDP establishment and Wike’s loyalists. The outcome, they say, could shape the party’s strategy moving forward and determine whether reconciliation is still possible.
The stage is set for what could be one of the PDP’s most decisive conventions in recent years. While party leaders call for peace and cohesion, the strong stance against Wike’s camp suggests that the internal contest is far from over.
