In a significant political development, the Benue State House of Assembly has elected Hon. Elias Emberga as its new Speaker, following the resignation of the former Speaker, Hon. Hyacinth Dajoh. The election, which took place during a special plenary session on Monday, marks a new chapter in the legislative leadership of the state.
Hon. Emberga, who represents the Ohimini State Constituency, emerged unopposed after receiving unanimous support from the majority of the lawmakers. His nomination was put forward by Hon. Kennedy Agbogo and seconded by Hon. Lami Adamu, signaling a smooth and unified transition of power within the House.
Taking the oath of office, Emberga pledged to uphold the constitution, promote legislative independence, and work closely with all arms of government to ensure good governance and transparency in Benue State. “I am committed to fostering unity among members and delivering legislative actions that reflect the aspirations of our people,” he stated during his acceptance speech.
The new Speaker’s emergence comes at a time when Benue State faces pressing challenges, including security concerns, youth unemployment, and the need for infrastructure development. Emberga’s leadership is expected to inject fresh energy into the legislative agenda and restore public confidence in the Assembly’s oversight functions.
Political analysts have described his election as a strategic move to stabilize the Assembly and reinforce collaboration between the legislature and the executive arm led by Governor Hyacinth Alia.
As Emberga assumes office, attention will now shift toward his ability to maintain legislative integrity, fast-track development-oriented bills, and bridge partisan divides within the House.
