Governor Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra State has described the Labour Party (LP) and the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as “dead” political forces in the state following Saturday’s by-elections.
Speaking at a victory celebration in Nanka on Sunday, Soludo said the outcome of the polls was a clear message from the electorate.
“ADC does not exist in Anambra. We showed it yesterday (Saturday). Labour Party is dead,” the governor declared, as APGA supporters cheered, waving party flags and displaying the cock emblem.
Soludo also took a swipe at former governor Peter Obi, who backed ADC candidates during the election. “They wanted to use it as a test case for the new concoction called ADC in Anambra, but that election was won by APGA; we won with about 77%, a very emphatic statement. The signal we sent was that both ADC and Labour Party are dead in Anambra,” he said.
According to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), APGA’s Emmanuel Nwachukwu won the Anambra South Senatorial seat with 90,408 votes, defeating APC’s Azuka Okwuosa, who had 19,847, and ADC’s Donald Amangbo, who scored 2,889. Nwachukwu replaces the late Senator Ifeanyi Ubah, who passed away in July 2024.
INEC also declared APGA’s Ifeoma Azikiwe winner in the Onitsha North Constituency 1 House of Assembly election, a constituency Soludo pointed out as Peter Obi’s base.
“That’s his state constituency; he lives in Onitsha. And all of them came… senators, members of the House of Representatives… It looked like this was an allied force. Who were they coming against? The people. But the people of Anambra spoke,” the governor said.
Soludo, a former Central Bank governor, is seeking re-election under APGA in the November 2025 governorship race. He recently reiterated his longstanding friendship with President Bola Tinubu, saying he has “no apology” for it.
