The Ogun State government has reiterated its commitment to enforcing the Animal Grazing Regulation and Cattle Ranch Establishment Law signed in 2021, warning that any herders or cattle owners found violating the law will face strict legal consequences.
In a statement issued on Monday by Kayode Akinmade, Special Adviser on Media and Strategy to Governor Dapo Abiodun, the government expressed concern over increasing reports of traffic obstruction, farmland invasions, and crop destruction caused by open grazing activities across the state.
“This is a violation of existing law and will not be tolerated a minute longer,” Akinmade stated.
The law prohibits open grazing and mandates that all livestock must be kept within designated ranches. Violators face:
- A minimum three-year jail term without the option of a fine.
- Forfeiture of livestock involved in the illegal grazing to the state government.
Akinmade emphasized that while herders are welcome to operate within Ogun State, they must do so within the framework of the law, without disrupting public order or infringing on private property.
“Open grazing of cattle or other animals remains prohibited in Ogun State. Anyone caught will be arrested and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law,” he warned.
The state government affirmed its readiness to enforce the law “with vigour” to ensure public safety, protect farmlands, and maintain order across the state.
