Tragedy struck in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, on Monday as three people lost their lives and four others were injured in a motor accident along the East-West Road near the Eliozu area in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area.
According to the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), the accident occurred around 10:40 a.m. and involved a white mini-bus (FGG801ZD) and a trailer (BRA454XA). The impact of the collision was severe, resulting in the death of two females and one male child, all of whom were confirmed dead upon arrival at the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital (UPTH). Their remains have been deposited in a Port Harcourt morgue.
Though some eyewitness accounts claim as many as five fatalities—three of them said to be students of the University of Port Harcourt—FRSC confirmed three deaths and four injuries.
The FRSC Public Relations Officer, Amarachi Ekwere, said the crash was reportedly caused by brake failure, which led to the fatal collision. She added that operatives swiftly cleared the scene of debris and road obstructions to prevent further accidents.
Ekwere emphasized the need for regular vehicle maintenance and vigilance by drivers to avoid similar tragedies.
