The Super Falcons of Nigeria kicked off their 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) campaign in emphatic style, dismantling Tunisia 3-0 in a spirited performance filled with both skill and sentiment.
Nigeria took firm control early, going 3-0 up by halftime with goals from Asisat Oshoala and Babajide Rinsola, while Chinwendu Ihezuo added a composed left-foot finish in the second half to seal the win. Rinsola dazzled with her pace, netting a goal and providing an assist in the first 45 minutes.
Beyond the scoreline, the game carried deep emotional weight. Players from both teams observed a minute of silence in memory of former Super Eagles goalkeeper Peter “Dodo Mayana” Rufai, who died last week. Oshoala honored the Nigerian legend by wearing a wristband bearing his name throughout the match.
Adding another layer of tribute, Rinsola celebrated her goal with the signature move of late Liverpool star Diogo Jota, who also passed away last week, in a touching homage that resonated with fans worldwide.
With Mission X underway, the Super Falcons have made it clear they are determined to reclaim their crown and bring home Nigeria’s 10th WAFCON title.
