Western Michigan University clinched its first NCAA Division I men’s ice hockey national championship on Saturday night, defeating Boston University 6–2 at the Enterprise Center in St. Louis. This victory marked the Broncos’ inaugural Frozen Four appearance and capped a historic season under head coach Pat Ferschweiler.
A Season of Firsts
The 2024–25 season was transformative for Western Michigan. The Broncos secured their first National Collegiate Hockey Conference (NCHC) regular-season title and won the NCHC Frozen Faceoff, earning them the top overall seed in the NCAA tournament. They concluded the season with a 32-7-1 record and a 10-game winning streak dating back to March 1.
Championship Game Highlights
Senior forward and Toronto Maple Leafs prospect Wyatt Schingoethe initiated the scoring just 1:38 into the game, redirecting a shot from Iiro Hakkarainen past BU’s freshman goalie, Mikhail Yegorov. Despite BU’s efforts to equalize, Western Michigan maintained control, with standout performances from players like Owen Michaels, who was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player.
Historic Achievement
Western Michigan’s triumph makes them the first team since Lake Superior State in 1988 to win a national title in their first Frozen Four appearance. The championship game drew a crowd of 16,953, contributing to a total Frozen Four attendance of over 50,000.
This victory not only signifies a milestone for the Broncos but also underscores the evolving landscape of college hockey, where emerging programs are making significant strides on the national stage.
