Immediate past Minister of Women Affairs, Uju Kennedy Ohanenye, is currently under investigation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over allegations of misappropriating N138.4 million in public funds. The funds, allocated in the 2023 budget, were intended for women-focused initiatives, including the P-BAT Cares for Women Initiative, but were allegedly diverted for personal use.

Ohanenye arrived at the EFCC headquarters in Abuja at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, where she remains in custody for questioning. According to an EFCC source, investigators uncovered significant breaches of due process in the ministry’s budget disbursement, revealing that funds meant to support women’s programs were unlawfully redirected.

The former minister is also facing scrutiny for other alleged fraudulent activities, including procurement violations and the unauthorized use of public funds. These allegations, if proven, represent a significant betrayal of public trust, especially given the funds were meant to empower women and advance gender-focused initiatives.

The investigation highlights the EFCC’s ongoing commitment to tackling corruption and holding public officials accountable. As the inquiry continues, Nigerians await the outcome, hoping for justice and the recovery of any misappropriated public resources.
