Women’s basketball legend, Diana Taurasi, has officially announced her retirement after more than two decades of dominating the WNBA. At 42 years old, Taurasi’s career is nothing short of extraordinary, and she has earned her place as one of the greatest players in the history of the sport.
Throughout her career, Taurasi played her entire tenure with the Phoenix Mercury, leading the team to three WNBA championships in 2007, 2009, and 2014. Known for her scoring ability, Taurasi became the WNBA’s all-time leading scorer with a staggering 10,646 points, a record almost 3,000 points higher than second-place Tina Charles.
Taurasi’s success didn’t stop at the WNBA level; she also played a pivotal role with the U.S. women’s national basketball team, winning six Olympic gold medals between 2004 and 2024, maintaining an undefeated streak in the event. She has also showcased her talent in Europe, competing for top clubs such as Dynamo Moscow, Spartak Moscow, Fenerbahçe, Galatasaray, and UMMC Ekaterinburg, where she clinched six Euro League titles.
Taurasi’s passion for the game and commitment to excellence were evident throughout her career. Typically, she would begin preparing four months before her team’s training camp each season. However, this year, she realized that it was time to step away from the sport she loves. In an exclusive interview with Time, Taurasi shared, “Mentally and physically, I’m just full. That’s probably the best way I can describe it. I’m full and I’m happy.”
Before entering the WNBA, Taurasi had a stellar college career at UConn, leading the Huskies to three consecutive NCAA championships. Her success continued as she was selected by the Phoenix Mercury with the first overall pick of the 2004 WNBA draft, where she quickly made an impact by earning the Rookie of the Year award in her debut season. The following year, Taurasi earned her first of 11 All-Star selections, further solidifying her status as a dominant force in the league.
Taurasi’s retirement marks the end of an era for the WNBA and basketball as a whole, with her legacy serving as an inspiration for future generations of players to come.
