Saquon Barkley made history in Super Bowl LIX, breaking Hall of Famer Terrell Davis’ record for most rushing yards in a single season, including playoffs, during the Philadelphia Eagles’ 40-22 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs at Caesars Superdome.
Heading into the game, Barkley needed just 30 yards to surpass Davis’ 1998 mark of 2,476 rushing yards. He achieved the milestone on the final play of the first half with a 2-yard run. Despite being held to just 31 yards on 12 carries in the first half, Barkley’s presence helped open up opportunities for his teammates as the Eagles took a commanding 24-0 halftime lead.
Barkley, who had already surpassed Davis’ 1997 total of 2,331 yards in the NFC Championship Game, finished with 57 rushing yards on 25 carries in the Super Bowl, bringing his season total to 2,504 yards—the most in NFL history. He became the first player ever to record over 2,500 rushing yards in a season, including the playoffs.
In addition to setting the new single-season rushing record, Barkley also broke Davis’ mark for most scrimmage yards in a season. He needed just three scrimmage yards to surpass Davis’ 1998 total of 2,762 yards and achieved that in the first quarter.
Barkley’s record-breaking campaign capped off a sensational first season with the Eagles. He rushed for 2,005 yards in the regular season—the eighth-highest total in league history—becoming only the ninth player to ever eclipse 2,000 rushing yards in a season. Remarkably, he also became the first player to accomplish the feat with a second team, solidifying himself as one of the greatest free-agent signings in NFL history.
