The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) has unveiled a groundbreaking €120 million initiative aimed at addressing Germany’s critical shortage of skilled workers by preparing international students for the labor market. Backed by the German Education Ministry, the “Campus Initiative for International Talents” will fund 114 projects across 104 universities nationwide, running through 2028.
Starting in April, the program focuses on integrating international talent into Germany’s workforce, a priority highlighted by DAAD President Joybrato Mukherjee, who called the skilled worker shortage “dramatic.” The initiative underscores the pivotal role of universities in attracting and retaining global talent, fostering a direct link between academia and industry.
The program comprises two key components: the FIT program and the Pro Plus program. The FIT program provides international students with comprehensive support throughout their academic journey, including career counseling and business networking opportunities. Meanwhile, the Pro Plus program targets graduates with foreign degrees, offering tailored education for the German labor market, along with language and cultural skills development.
Germany, a leading destination for international students, currently hosts a record 380,000 enrollees for the 2023/24 winter semester, reaffirming its status as the world’s third-most-popular study destination after the United States and the United Kingdom. This initiative marks a significant step in ensuring these students transition seamlessly into the country’s workforce.
