The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has expressed support for the ongoing actions taken by teachers in response to recent security concerns, urging authorities to take immediate steps to address the growing threat posed by kidnappers and other criminal elements.

The labour movement said the concerns raised by teachers are justified, particularly following incidents involving the abduction of educators and students. According to the NLC, workers should not be expected to operate in environments where their lives and safety are under constant threat.

In a statement on Wednesday, the union called on federal and state governments, as well as security agencies, to intensify efforts to secure the release of those abducted and strengthen protection around schools and other public institutions.

The NLC warned that persistent insecurity is disrupting education, affecting communities and creating fear among workers and their families. It stressed that the safety of teachers, pupils and citizens must remain a top priority for government at all levels.

The congress also urged authorities to improve intelligence gathering, enhance security patrols and deploy adequate personnel to vulnerable areas to prevent future attacks.

Labour leaders noted that the continued targeting of schools poses a serious risk to educational development and could discourage parents from sending their children to school.

While reaffirming its solidarity with affected teachers and communities, the NLC appealed for swift and decisive action to restore public confidence and ensure that educational institutions remain safe places for learning.

The organisation further pledged to continue monitoring developments and advocating measures aimed at protecting workers and improving security across the country.
