Meta Platforms has announced the rollout of paid subscription services across its major social media platforms, including Instagram, Facebook and WhatsApp, as part of a broader strategy to diversify revenue beyond digital advertising.

The new model allows users to pay for enhanced features, premium support, and additional account verification options, depending on the platform and subscription tier. Meta said the initiative is designed to offer users more control over their experience while also creating new monetisation opportunities for creators and businesses operating within its ecosystem.

According to the company, the subscription rollout will vary by region and may include benefits such as improved visibility, enhanced security features, and access to exclusive tools for content creation and audience engagement. The company added that free access to core services will remain available, ensuring that existing users can continue using the platforms without mandatory payment.

Meta stated that the move reflects changing trends in the digital economy, where users are increasingly willing to pay for premium online services that offer convenience, protection, and enhanced functionality. The company also noted that the subscription system will complement, rather than replace, its existing advertising-based revenue model.

Industry analysts say the introduction of paid tiers across Meta’s platforms marks a significant shift in the social media landscape, as major tech companies look to reduce dependence on advertising revenue amid fluctuating digital ad markets and increased regulatory scrutiny.

The rollout comes as Meta continues to invest in artificial intelligence tools, content moderation systems, and creator monetisation programs aimed at strengthening user engagement across its platforms. Experts suggest that subscription-based features could become a growing segment of the company’s long-term business strategy.

While reactions from users remain mixed, Meta maintains that the new services are optional and intended to enhance user experience for those willing to pay for additional benefits.

The company is expected to expand the subscription offerings gradually, with further details on pricing and regional availability to be released in subsequent updates.
