MADRID — Dani Carvajal has played his final match for Real Madrid, bringing an emotional end to a 23-year association with the Spanish giants and closing one of the most decorated chapters in the club’s modern history.
Carvajal captained Madrid in their final La Liga match of the season against Athletic Club at the Santiago Bernabéu, receiving a standing ovation from supporters when he was substituted. The farewell came days after Real Madrid confirmed that the veteran right-back would leave the club at the end of the season by mutual agreement.
The 34-year-old joined Real Madrid’s academy in 2002 at the age of 10 and rose through the youth ranks before returning to the first team after a brief spell with Bayer Leverkusen. He went on to spend 13 seasons in Madrid’s senior squad, becoming one of the most successful defenders in the club’s history.
Carvajal leaves with 27 trophies, including six UEFA Champions League titles, four La Liga crowns, two Copa del Rey trophies, four Spanish Super Cups, five UEFA Super Cups and six Club World Cups. He made about 450 appearances for the club and scored 14 goals.
His final match ended in victory, with Real Madrid beating Athletic Club 4-2. Carvajal provided an assist for the opening goal by Gonzalo García before being taken off to applause from teammates and fans. The match also marked farewell appearances for other departing figures, including David Alaba.
Speaking after the game, Carvajal described Real Madrid as “my life” and thanked the club, his family, teammates, coaches and supporters for their role in his career. He said he hoped to return to the club in another capacity in the future.
Carvajal’s departure also symbolises the end of an era. He was the last remaining starter from Madrid’s 2014 Champions League-winning side that captured “La Décima,” and a key member of the squad that later dominated Europe with repeated continental triumphs.
Club president Florentino Pérez praised him as a Real Madrid legend and one of the great symbols of the club’s values. For supporters, Carvajal leaves not only as a serial winner, but as an academy graduate who became captain and gave virtually his entire football life to Madrid.
