Lebanon’s Deputy Prime Minister, Tarek Mitri, has cautioned that the ongoing conflict along the country’s southern border could see Lebanon suffer a fate similar to the devastation experienced in the Gaza Strip.
He expressed “real fears” that escalating hostilities might transform much of Lebanon into a conflict zone with widespread destruction.
Mitri, speaking in an interview with Sky News, also accused Israeli forces of committing what he called war crimes and targeting emergency responders amid the fighting. His remarks highlight deepening concern over the humanitarian and security fallout from clashes involving Lebanese militant groups and Israeli military operations.
The warning comes against the backdrop of sustained tensions in the region, as international actors grapple with preventing a wider conflagration that could further destabilise Lebanon and affect civilian populations.
