Governors elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have rejected a proposal by a faction aligned with Nyesom Wike to impose a consensus candidate as the party’s national chairman ahead of the 2027 elections.
The governors, under the PDP Governors’ Forum, insisted that due process must be followed in selecting party leadership, stressing that any attempt to handpick a chairman without broad consultation would be unacceptable.
The Wike-backed bloc had pushed for a consensus arrangement, arguing it would help stabilise the party and strengthen unity. However, the governors maintained that such a move risks deepening internal divisions rather than resolving them.
They reiterated their commitment to an open and transparent process, warning against actions that could undermine the party’s cohesion as preparations for the 2027 general elections gather pace.
