With the United States and Iran now engaged in open conflict just months before the 2026 FIFA World Cup, there is growing uncertainty over whether Iran’s national football team will take part in the tournament.
Mehdi Taj, president of the Football Federation Islamic Republic of Iran, said it is unclear if Team Melli will travel to the United States for its scheduled group matches this June, citing the impact of recent U.S. and Israeli military strikes on Iran. “After this attack, we cannot be expected to look forward to the World Cup with hope,” Taj told Iranian media.
Iran qualified for its fourth consecutive World Cup and is drawn in Group G alongside Belgium, Egypt and New Zealand, with all games set to be played in U.S. cities. The tournament is due to run from June 11 to July 19 across the United States, Canada and Mexico.
FIFA has not commented publicly on Iran’s status but retains the authority to replace any team unable to participate. Possible alternatives could come from the Asian region if Iran withdraws, though no official decision has been made.
