AWKA, — The Anambra State Government says it will pursue justice in the case of a junior secondary school student who allegedly suffered severe burns after an assault by her guardian in Agulu, Anaocha LGA.

State Commissioner for Education, Prof. Ngozi Chuma-Udeh, said the government would not tolerate child abuse and that the matter would not be covered up if culpability is established. The commissioner’s remarks followed reports that the student, identified as Miracle Amah, arrived at school with fresh burn injuries, prompting school authorities to escalate the case.

According to the account carried by NAN, the student alleged her guardian accused her of contacting a male friend, threatened her with a knife, and then inflicted burns using a heated pressing iron when she denied wrongdoing.

Police in Anambra have reportedly detained the suspect, Mrs. Osinachi Edeh, while investigations continue. As of now, authorities have not publicly released formal charges.

The case has renewed attention on child protection enforcement in schools and households, with officials under pressure to ensure medical care for the victim, transparent prosecution steps, and stronger referral systems for abuse reporting. Under Nigerian law, child abuse and grievous assault can attract serious criminal penalties if proven in court.
