The House of Representatives has inaugurated a bipartisan conference committee to reconcile areas of disagreement between the House and Senate versions of the Electoral Act (Amendment) Bill.
The move was announced in a statement on Thursday by the House spokesman, Akin Rotimi Jr., who said the decision followed a directive from the leadership of the House conveyed through an internal memo dated February 4, 2026, and signed by the Clerk, Yahaya Danzaria.
The committee is chaired by Hon. Adebayo Balogun and includes Reps Fred Agbedi, Sada Soli, Ahmadu Jaha, Iduma Enwo, Saidu Abdullahi, and Dr Zainab Gimba.
According to the statement, the panel is tasked with working alongside its Senate counterpart to harmonise the differing provisions in both chambers’ versions of the bill before final passage by the National Assembly.
The development comes a day after the Senate approved the Electoral Act (Repeal and Re-enactment) Amendment Bill 2026 following its third reading.
The proposed amendment is aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s electoral framework ahead of the 2027 general elections, with provisions for tougher sanctions against electoral malpractice and revised timelines for key electoral processes.
The House reaffirmed its commitment to advancing reforms that promote transparency, credibility, and public trust in the country’s democratic system.
