Real Madrid have been dealt a major blow with star forward Kylian Mbappé ruled out with a knee injury just as he closes in on club goalscoring history.
The Spanish giants confirmed on Wednesday that the France international has suffered a sprain to the lateral ligament in his left knee, though the club stopped short of giving an official recovery timeline. French daily L’Équipe reports that Mbappé could be sidelined for at least three weeks following an MRI scan that revealed the lesion.
Mbappé, 27, has been in spectacular form this season, scoring 29 goals in all competitions and leading the scoring charts in both La Liga and the Champions League. He recently netted his 59th goal of the calendar year for Real Madrid, equalling Cristiano Ronaldo’s club record and underlining his status as the team’s attacking focal point.
According to reports, Mbappé had been feeling discomfort in his knee for several weeks but continued to play through the pain. The issue worsened, prompting Madrid’s medical staff to send him for detailed imaging on Wednesday morning. The scan confirmed damage to the lateral ligament, forcing the club to sideline him for treatment and rest.
The timing is particularly difficult for Madrid. If the three-week estimate holds, Mbappé is expected to miss key fixtures, including league matches against Real Betis and Levante, as well as a Champions League tie against his former club Monaco. He is also likely to sit out the Spanish Super Cup in January, including a potential final on 11 January.
Head coach Xabi Alonso (who took over from Carlo Ancelotti in June 2025) will now have to reshuffle his attack, leaning more heavily on the likes of Vinícius Júnior, Jude Bellingham and Brazilian prodigy Endrick to maintain the club’s momentum in domestic and European competitions.
For Mbappé, the priority will be avoiding any rush back that could aggravate the injury. With Real Madrid chasing major trophies on multiple fronts — and the Frenchman on pace to break further records — both player and club know that managing his recovery carefully could define the rest of their season.
