GUSAU, Zamfara State — The Zamfara Zakkat and Endowment Board says it has trained 400 orphans in computer skills and poultry farming as part of ongoing efforts to empower vulnerable children across the state.
This was disclosed in a statement on Friday in Gusau by the board’s Public Relations Officer, Jamilu Sani.
According to the statement, the Executive Secretary of the board, Mallam Habibu Balarabe, said the initiative is designed to equip orphans with practical, income-generating skills that can help lift them out of poverty and dependence.
Balarabe also revealed that the board would empower an additional 200 female orphans with start-up capital to enable them to begin small-scale businesses.
He explained that the 200 beneficiaries had already undergone a three-week intensive training in poultry farming and basic computer skills, and would receive starter packs during an upcoming presentation ceremony.
“These young girls have completed their training, and we want to ensure they do not stop there,” he said. “By giving them capital and starter packs, we are helping them to stand on their feet and become self-reliant.”
Beyond economic empowerment, the Executive Secretary noted that the Zakkat and Endowment Board had also intervened in legal and debt-related cases affecting vulnerable persons in the state.
He said the board had settled the debts of 200 people with cases pending in Shari’ah Courts and Correctional Centres across Zamfara, leading to their release and freedom.
“This is part of our mandate — not only to support the poor with material needs, but also to restore their dignity and give them a second chance in life,” Balarabe added.
The board urged wealthy individuals and organisations to continue supporting its humanitarian programmes, stressing that sustained partnership was crucial to easing hardship among orphans, debtors and other less privileged groups in Zamfara State.
