Cairo, Egypt — World leaders and dignitaries converged on Cairo for the long-awaited grand opening of the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM), a billion-dollar cultural landmark near the Giza Pyramids and Sphinx that Egypt hails as the largest museum dedicated to a single civilization.
The ceremony—staged with pharaonic pageantry, a drone light show of ancient deities and pyramids, and performances by top Egyptian artists—marked a flagship moment in the government’s push to supercharge tourism and inject foreign currency into a strained economy.
President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi framed the opening as both capstone and springboard. “This is the biggest museum in the world dedicated to a single civilization,” he said. “This glorious edifice is not only a house for keeping precious relics, but a living testimony to the genius of the Egyptian.”
Conceived in 2005 under then-President Hosni Mubarak, the project weathered delays during and after the 2011 Arab Spring before being revived as part of al-Sisi’s broader megaproject agenda since 2014. The museum houses around 100,000 artifacts spanning 7,000 years of history and is projected to draw five million visitors annually.
The headline attraction is the complete Tutankhamun collection, displayed together for the first time since the boy-king’s tomb was discovered in 1922. Visitors will encounter his iconic golden death mask, gilded throne, sarcophagus, and thousands of personal and ceremonial objects that illuminate Egypt’s New Kingdom splendor.
Beyond Tutankhamun, expansive galleries, conservation labs, and immersive exhibits aim to reframe Egyptology for a new generation, while landscaped promenades visually tether the museum to the Giza Plateau. Officials say the GEM will anchor an upgraded visitor ecosystem around Cairo—pairing cultural heritage with modern amenities to extend stays and raise per-capita spending.
With its blend of scholarship, spectacle, and soft power, the Grand Egyptian Museum opens as a monumental bet that Egypt’s ancient past can help underwrite its economic future.
