Spain has declared a state of emergency following a massive power outage that disrupted large parts of the country and neighboring Portugal.
According to Spain’s national energy operator, more than 30% of the country’s power demand has already been restored. However, Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez stated that the exact cause of the outage remains under investigation.
Portuguese Prime Minister Luís Montenegro reassured the public that there is “no indication” the blackout was the result of a cyber-attack.
Across affected areas, people reported widespread disruption — including driving around to find open petrol stations, teaching classes in the dark, and even struggling to locate working beer pumps in Benidorm.
Authorities are attempting to maintain calm but have increased security force deployments and are urging citizens to limit mobile phone use to ease network pressure.
