The commander of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Navy, Alireza Tangsiri, has reportedly been killed in an airstrike, according to Israeli and US officials, marking a significant escalation in the ongoing regional conflict.
Israeli authorities said Tangsiri was “eliminated” in a targeted strike in the southern port city of Bandar Abbas, describing him as a key figure responsible for naval operations, including actions affecting the strategic Strait of Hormuz.
The Israeli military added that the operation also killed other senior IRGC naval officials, including the head of its intelligence unit, in what it characterised as a major blow to Iran’s maritime command structure.
The United States later confirmed Tangsiri’s death, with Central Command describing the strike as part of broader efforts to weaken Iran’s military capabilities in the region.
Tangsiri, who had led the IRGC Navy since 2018, was widely regarded as a central figure in Iran’s naval strategy and had been linked to efforts to control or disrupt shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, a vital global energy corridor.
Iranian authorities have not immediately issued a detailed public confirmation, and the circumstances surrounding the strike remain subject to conflicting accounts.
