Omoyele Sowore and other activists, including lawyers, accompanied National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member Ushie Uguamaye, also known as Raye, to a meeting with her Local Government Inspector (LGI) after she was summoned over a viral video.
In the video, Raye criticized Nigeria’s worsening economic situation and blamed President Bola Tinubu, calling him a “terrible leader.” The video sparked controversy, leading to reports that NYSC officials were threatening her. She was then instructed to appear at the NYSC office for questioning.
On Monday, Sowore and several legal practitioners, including Festus Ogun, Yinka Oyesomi, and Justice Ojienoh, escorted Raye to the NYSC office in Eti-Osa, Lagos. However, according to an update from Sowore on X (formerly Twitter), the NYSC officials failed to show up.
“We arrived at the Eti-Osa LGI offices of the NYSC with youth corper Ushie Rita Uguamaye in Lagos. She was scheduled to appear before the LGI today, and we escorted her with attorneys… but the LGI official had absconded, failing to show up throughout our stay,” Sowore wrote.
The incident has drawn attention to issues surrounding freedom of speech and the treatment of corps members who express political views.
