As Nigeria commemorates Democracy Day, Senator Natasha Akpoti Uduaghan has urged citizens to go beyond celebrating elections and ensure that democracy translates into real progress, equity, and national cohesion.
In a message released on June 12, 2025, the Kogi Central lawmaker paid homage to the late Chief M.K.O. Abiola and other democracy activists, noting their sacrifices laid the groundwork for Nigeria’s democratic journey.
“June 12 stands as a symbol of our collective struggle for democratic governance,” she said. “It is a tribute to the courage of Chief M.K.O. Abiola and the countless Nigerians—known and unknown—who stood firm to defend the sanctity of the people’s will.”
Senator Uduaghan stressed that democracy should not be judged solely by elections, but by its ability to improve lives and safeguard human rights. “Democracy must bring real development, empower the weak, uphold the rule of law, and protect the dignity of every Nigerian,” she added.
She called on citizens—especially women and young people—to play active roles in shaping the country’s future. “I urge all Nigerians to remain engaged. Our participation and vigilance are vital in building a Nigeria that serves every citizen, regardless of tribe, religion, gender, or class.”
Reaffirming her commitment to transparent and inclusive governance, the senator promised to continue pushing for legislative reforms that reflect the needs of all Nigerians.
“Let us not lose hope in our nation. Let us build bridges across divides and work toward a future where democracy becomes a lived reality for all,” she concluded.
Her Democracy Day message ended with a note of unity and optimism: “Happy Democracy Day, Nigeria. God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”
