The Rivers State House of Assembly has endorsed President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in the state, citing the prolonged political crisis that has lasted for over a year.
In a statement issued by Speaker Martin Amaewhule, the Assembly attributed the crisis to the actions of suspended Governor Siminalayi Fubara, accusing him of “despotic and tyrannical actions.” The statement accused Fubara of repeatedly disregarding court rulings, failing to uphold his oath of office, and unconstitutionally interfering with the legislative arm of government, all of which it claimed contributed to the unrest.
“The Governor’s despotic and tyrannical actions, as confirmed by the courts, have unconstitutionally hindered the Rivers State House of Assembly from functioning, underlies the situation,” Amaewhule stated.
He described President Tinubu’s intervention as being in the “best interest of the country” and urged residents to remain calm as the newly appointed sole administrator assumes control.
“We assure you all, our constituents, that we would abide by this declaration even though it is not what we prayed for,” the statement reads.
“Mr. President has acted in the best interest of the country therefore, we call on you all to remain calm as the sole administrator appointed by the president assumes his duty in the best interest of our state and nation.”
Amaewhule reassured constituents that the Assembly would fully comply with the president’s directive and encouraged the people of Rivers State to remain peaceful. He also expressed confidence that the sole administrator would act in the best interest of both the state and the nation.
“The Rivers State House of Assembly pledges its full support to the Sole Administrator and will provide any assistance required to ensure the restoration of stability and effective governance in our dear state,” he said.
The declaration of a state of emergency marks a pivotal moment in the ongoing political crisis that has engulfed Rivers State for over a year.
