The Nigeria Democratic Congress has appointed veteran journalist, lawyer and pro-democracy advocate Osa Director as its new National Publicity Secretary, in a move the party says is aimed at strengthening its communication structure ahead of future political engagements.
The party also named media professionals Peter Agbo Ekele and Lawal Sabo Ibrahim as Deputy National Publicity Secretaries.
In a statement issued by its National Working Committee on May 16, 2026, the NDC said the appointments reflected its commitment to building a professional, credible and values-driven communication system.
According to the party, Director brings decades of experience in journalism, law, media management and democratic advocacy to the role. He gained national prominence during Nigeria’s pro-democracy struggle as a journalist with TELL Magazine, one of the country’s leading publications during military rule. The NDC recalled that his commitment to press freedom and democratic accountability led to his detention under the late General Sani Abacha’s regime.
Director is also a co-founder and former Editor-in-Chief of Insider Weekly Magazine, where he contributed to investigative journalism and public accountability. He later established the law firm Osa Director & Co., expanding his professional work into legal practice and public affairs.
The party also highlighted his academic and professional background, saying he holds qualifications in Biochemistry, Management, Law, Media and Communications, and Corporate Governance, with additional certifications from institutions including Cambridge University and Leeds Metropolitan University.
Ekele was described as an experienced journalist and editor with more than a decade in the Nigerian media industry. A graduate of English Language from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, he has worked as reporter, news editor, group news editor and editor in organisations including New Nigerian, National Accord and LEADERSHIP Newspapers. He currently serves as Editor-in-Chief of The Cabal Newspaper.
Ibrahim, meanwhile, was praised for his background in journalism, publishing and academia. He holds degrees in English Education and English Language from the University of Jos and Bayero University, Kano. He has worked as a lecturer at Kano State Polytechnic and held senior editorial roles at Peoples Daily and LEADERSHIP Newspapers. From 2017 to 2023, he served as Managing Director and Editor-in-Chief of Triumph Publishing Company.
The NDC expressed confidence that the appointees would improve the party’s public engagement, strengthen its media strategy and promote its vision of a democratic, inclusive and prosperous Nigeria.
