Nigerian authorities have banned the broadcast of Eedris Abdulkareem’s latest protest song, “Tell Your Papa, “Which criticizes President Bola Tinubu’s administration. The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) issued a directive citing the song’s content as a violation of public decency, referencing Section 3.1.8 of the Nigeria Broadcasting Code.
In “Tell Your Papa,” Abdulkareem addresses Seyi Tinubu, the president’s son, urging him to convey to his father the hardships Nigerians are facing. The song highlights issues such as economic instability, insecurity, and unfulfilled promises. Lyrics from the track include:
“Seyi, tell your papa country hard. Tell your papa people dey die. Tell your papa this one don pass jagajaga.”
Despite the ban, the song has gained significant traction on social media platforms. The Performing Musicians Association of Nigeria (PMAN) criticized the NBC’s decision, suggesting that the ban might inadvertently increase the song’s popularity. This incident is reminiscent of Abdulkareem’s 2004 song “Jaga Jaga,” which was also banned for its critical stance on the government. Amnesty International has condemned the ban, describing it as a violation of artistic freedom and an abuse of power.
