The Nigerian military has confirmed the safe return of retired Brigadier General Mahrazu Tsiga after nearly two months in captivity, asserting that his release was secured without any ransom payment.
In a statement issued by Defence Headquarters (DHQ) spokesperson, Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, the military said a combination of tactical operations and strategic pressure led to the general’s freedom.
“Since Brigadier General Tsiga’s abduction on 7 February 2025, troops have remained relentless in their pursuit, conducting both air and ground operations within Danmusa, Kankara and Faskari Local Government Areas,” Gusau explained. “These operations kept pressure on the abductors.”
Gusau emphasized the dedication of troops on the ground, highlighting the dangers they faced during the mission. “It is thus only fair to recognize the significant sacrifices made by these troops who have worked day and night, often at great risk to their own lives in their search of the senior officer,” he said.
He also condemned rumors circulating online that suggested ransom was exchanged for the general’s release. “The disparaging online [reports] are therefore nothing but presumably an act of mischief, calculated to undermine the dedicated efforts of military personnel working to eradicate terrorists, bandits, and other criminal elements from the North West region,” Gusau said.
He stressed that the military utilized all necessary tools at its disposal. “The military operations comprising both kinetic and non-kinetic strategies facilitated the rescue of General Tsiga, as his life is invaluable and anything that needed to be done to ensure he was safe was adopted,” he concluded.
Tsiga, a former Director General of the NYSC, was abducted in Katsina State in February and held for 56 days.
