The University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) has confirmed the tragic killing of one of its physiotherapists, Dr. Alex Ogunniyi, who was fatally struck by a stray bullet last Friday.
According to the hospital’s Public Relations Officer, Joshua Uwaila, Dr. Ogunniyi was shot while heading to a nearby eatery for lunch. Witnesses reported that a vehicle chasing another opened fire, and one of the bullets struck Ogunniyi in the neck. Despite being rushed to UBTH’s Accident and Emergency Department, he was pronounced dead shortly after.
The hospital management has formally petitioned the Edo State Police Command and copied the Department of State Services (DSS), urging a thorough investigation and swift action to bring the perpetrators to justice. In response to the incident, healthcare workers at UBTH staged a protest demanding accountability and improved security measures to protect staff and patients alike.
