Suspected political thugs on Monday reportedly attacked the convoy of former Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, in Kebbi State. The incident, which left several supporters injured and vehicles vandalised, has sparked political tension in the state.
According to eyewitness accounts, no fewer than 10 vehicles were damaged during the clash, while many members of Malami’s entourage sustained various degrees of injuries.
Reacting to the development, Malami, now a leader of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Kebbi, described the incident as politically motivated. He stressed that his visit to Birnin Kebbi had nothing to do with campaigns.
“It’s a painful act clearly linked to politics. Some thugs came out from the APC state headquarters armed with dangerous weapons and stones, attacking and destroying our convoy,” Malami alleged.
“The truth is, when it comes to politics in Kebbi State there is no retreat, no surrender.”
However, the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kebbi State distanced itself from the attack. The party’s Publicity Secretary, Isa Assalafy, strongly condemned the violence while insisting that APC had no reason to disrupt peace in the state.
“Kebbi is a peaceful state. No government that enjoys massive support from the people and is confident of victory in 2027 would want the peace of the state to be disrupted,” Assalafy stated.
He also alleged that the confrontation worsened after security operatives attached to Malami’s convoy opened fire, which further escalated the situation.
The attack highlights growing political rivalry in Kebbi as the 2027 general elections approach. While Malami blames APC loyalists for the violence, the ruling party insists it remains committed to peace and stability in the state.
