On April 13, 2025, Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro’s official residence in Harrisburg was targeted in an arson attack while he and his family were asleep inside. The suspect, 38-year-old Cody Balmer, allegedly scaled a security fence, broke into the mansion, and used Molotov cocktails to set parts of the residence on fire. Balmer later turned himself to the police, expressing hatred toward Governor Shapiro and admitting that he intended to harm him if encountered. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, but the fire caused significant damage to the property.
Balmer has been charged with multiple offenses, including attempted murder, terrorism, arson, burglary, and aggravated assault. He is currently being held without bail, and a preliminary hearing is scheduled for April 23. Authorities are investigating the motive behind the attack, including potential antisemitic intent, as the incident occurred shortly after the Shapiro family celebrated Passover.
Governor Shapiro condemned the act of violence and reaffirmed his commitment to public service and religious freedom. He emphasized that such attacks will not deter him from his duties or his faith.
