In an operation under ‘Operation Whirlwind,’ the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) intercepted 125,000 litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), commonly known as petrol, in Kebbi State. This seizure, valued at ₦125 million, marks the largest fuel bust since the initiative began.
Assistant Comptroller-General Husseini Ejibunu, the National Coordinator of Operation Whirlwind, announced the seizure during a press briefing in Birnin Kebbi. He emphasized that fuel smuggling poses a significant economic threat, leading to revenue losses, artificial scarcity, and security risks.
The operation targeted three Scania trucks loaded with smuggled fuel in Tsamiya, a border community. These trucks, registered in the Republic of Benin, had been under surveillance before their interception. The confiscated fuel was packed in 4,375 jerrycans of 25 litres each and 54 drums of 200 litres each.
The success of this operation was attributed to the collaboration between the NCS, the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA), and the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA). Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, commended the officers’ vigilance and highlighted the importance of inter-agency cooperation in combating smuggling activities.
Kebbi State, due to its proximity to international borders, has been identified as a hotspot for fuel smuggling. The NCS has reiterated its commitment to intensifying anti-smuggling efforts while facilitating legitimate trade. The public is encouraged to support these efforts by reporting suspicious activities to authorities.
This operation underscores the NCS’s dedication to safeguarding Nigeria’s economic interests and ensuring compliance with trade regulations.
