In a major breakthrough in Nigeria’s ongoing war against drug trafficking, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has arrested a notorious drug kingpin in Ekiti State with a massive consignment of illegal substances, including variants known on the street as “Loud” and “Colorado”. The operation, which was executed following weeks of surveillance, underscores the agency’s renewed determination to dismantle drug distribution networks across the country.
Details of the Arrest
According to an official statement released by the NDLEA spokesperson, Femi Babafemi, the suspect was apprehended in Ado-Ekiti, the state capital, following actionable intelligence. Upon arrest, officers recovered multiple bags filled with high-grade cannabis (Loud) and synthetic strains like Colorado, which are known for their potent psychoactive effects.
In total, the NDLEA confirmed the seizure of over 100kg of illicit drugs, which were carefully concealed in a black SUV and an adjoining storage facility used by the syndicate. The agency believes the consignment was part of a larger shipment intended for distribution in nightclubs, campuses, and other high-demand zones within the South-West region.
Background: What Are “Loud” and “Colorado”?
To clarify, “Loud” is a street name for a premium strain of marijuana known for its intense aroma and psychoactive strength. Meanwhile, “Colorado” refers to a synthetic cannabinoid, often laced with harmful chemicals, and is considered far more dangerous than traditional cannabis. Both substances have seen a surge in demand among Nigerian youths, raising concerns about public health and security.
Moving forward from earlier drug busts in Lagos and Ogun states, the NDLEA extended its intelligence operations to Ekiti after noticing a spike in synthetic drug abuse in the area. The agency traced multiple transactions to the arrested kingpin, whose name is being withheld pending further investigations.
A coordinated sting operation was launched in the early hours of Friday, with undercover agents posing as buyers. Once the suspect was lured out, NDLEA operatives swiftly moved in, arresting him without resistance. The discovery of additional drug paraphernalia and packaging materials at the site suggests the suspect operated a well-organized drug distribution ring.
Reacting to the development, NDLEA Chairman Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Retd) commended the Ekiti State command for their precision and bravery. He stated, “This arrest is a clear message to drug cartels that the NDLEA is watching, and we will continue to dismantle every network threatening the safety and health of our citizens.” Marwa further stressed that the agency is investing heavily in technology, surveillance, and grassroots education to curb the rising tide of drug abuse in Nigeria.
