Tragedy struck Benue State on Wednesday as Chief Anthony Adejoh, the District Head of Odugbeho in Agatu Local Government Area, was killed by suspected armed herdsmen while working on his farm in Otobi-Akpa, Otukpo LGA.
The royal father was attacked alongside another victim, Jerry John, both of whom were reportedly ambushed and shot dead while tending to their farmland. Locals, who rushed to the scene after hearing gunshots, discovered their lifeless bodies.
Community Reactions and Official Confirmation
The Chairman of Agatu LGA, Mr. Marvis Ejeh, confirmed the incident, describing Chief Adejoh as “a peace builder and a respected community leader.” Ejeh emphasized that while the community is mourning, it remains calm, urging against reprisal attacks.
“Nobody is taking the law into his hands. Agatu is calm and peaceful,” Ejeh said.
“Agatu people residing and farming in other LGAs should be careful and watchful. They should liaise with the local authority and know the areas that are safe to work.”
The attack highlights the persistent insecurity in Benue South (Zone C), where communities have long been under threat from armed herdsmen violence.
Law Enforcement Status
As of the time of reporting, Benue State Police spokesperson, CSP Catherine Anene, stated she had not yet received official reports of the incident.
Broader Implications
The killing of a traditional leader underscores the severity of the security situation in rural Benue and the growing danger faced by residents, especially in contested farming zones. It raises renewed concerns about the safety of farmers, displacement of communities, and the pressure on already strained local governments.
