The Abia State Police Command has confirmed the tragic deaths of two Chinese nationals and a Nigerian police officer during a rescue mission in Uturu, Isuikwuato Local Government Area of the state.
According to a statement released on Saturday by the Police Public Relations Officer, Maureen Chinaka, the incident occurred after a group of unidentified gunmen ambushed a convoy transporting Chinese workers and their police escorts to a company site located in Agukwu-Amaya, Ndundu Community.
Those who lost their lives in the attack include Mr. Quan and Mr. Cai—both Chinese nationals—and Inspector Audu Saidu, who was part of the security detail. The attackers also made away with Inspector Saidu’s service rifle.
Despite the tragic loss, security forces managed to rescue several individuals. Chinaka noted that a swift joint operation involving police operatives, the military, and other security agencies led to the rescue of four Chinese expatriates and two Nigerian police officers.
“Upon receiving the information, operatives from Abia State Command, in a joint operation with the military and other sister agencies, launched a search mission,” the police spokesperson stated.
She added, “As a result, three Chinese expatriates were rescued unhurt, while one sustained injuries. Inspector Uba Ahmed, who was also rescued, suffered a gunshot injury on his leg. Both the injured officer and the expatriate are currently receiving treatment and responding to treatment at FMC Abakaliki.”
Efforts to fully secure the area and track down those responsible are ongoing. On April 5, 2025, a tactical team led by the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Operations) visited the ambush site to aid in the continuing investigation and search operations.
Thanks to coordinated efforts involving security personnel and community support, another police officer, Inspector Ijeagwa Friday, was located and rescued without injury.
Commissioner of Police, CP Danladi Isa, has vowed that those behind the violent assault will not escape justice.
“The Commissioner of Police, Abia State Command, CP Danladi Isa, has assured the good people of Abia State that the perpetrators of this heinous crime will be brought to justice.”
He also encouraged citizens to stay vigilant, continue with their normal routines without fear, and report any suspicious activity. He urged the public to reach out to nearby police stations or use the command’s emergency hotlines: 08035415405, 08079210004, 08079210005, 08079210006.
