President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has ordered an immediate suspension of the sale or concession of any property belonging to the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), citing the need to safeguard national infrastructure and ensure transparency in asset management.
The directive came during Wednesday’s Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, where the council also approved the procurement of advanced aviation security and safety equipment for Nigerian airports.
According to the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, President Tinubu expressed concern over attempts by certain parties to dispose of strategic FAAN assets without due process. The President reportedly instructed the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development to review all previous transactions related to airport properties to prevent further misuse.
“The President has made it clear that no FAAN property — whether land, building, or equipment — should be sold, transferred, or concessioned without his direct approval,” Idris told reporters after the meeting.
Meanwhile, the council also approved the purchase of cutting-edge security gadgets aimed at improving airport surveillance, passenger screening, and overall aviation safety. The new systems, officials said, will help detect potential threats and enhance Nigeria’s compliance with international aviation standards.
The procurement is part of ongoing reforms in the aviation sector, which include modernizing infrastructure, boosting revenue transparency, and ensuring safer air travel across the country.
With the new directive, FAAN is expected to focus on maintaining and upgrading its facilities rather than disposing of them — a move the government says will preserve national assets and strengthen Nigeria’s aviation capacity.
