French authorities say they thwarted an apparent bomb attack outside a Bank of America building in central Paris early Saturday, detaining one suspect and launching a terrorism investigation.
The incident occurred at about 3:30 a.m. local time outside the bank’s premises in the 8th arrondissement, near the Champs‑Élysées, when officers observed two individuals with a bag suspected to contain an explosive device. One man was arrested while a second fled the scene, police said.
Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez lauded the rapid intervention by Paris police, which likely prevented a violent act, and noted heightened vigilance amid ongoing security concerns. Authorities also reported the anti‑terrorism prosecutor’s office has taken over the investigation into possible terrorism‑related offences, including attempted arson and involvement in a terrorist organisation.
Officials have strengthened security around potential targets, particularly U.S.‑affiliated sites, as part of broader efforts to counter threats in France’s major cities.
