Nigeria’s national electricity grid suffered another system collapse on Wednesday morning, plunging large parts of the country into darkness.
Reports indicate that the grid lost power generation shortly after 11:00 AM, causing widespread outages.
Sources within the power generation sector confirmed a major grid disturbance, which led to a system trip-off and a nationwide blackout before noon.
At 11:00 AM, the grid was producing 4,064 megawatts, but this dropped sharply to 1,203MW by 12:00 PM before plummeting to 0.00MW at 1:00 PM, completely halting power supply across the country.
The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has yet to issue an official statement, as its spokesperson, Ndidi Mbah, was reportedly unavailable at the time.
This is the first major grid collapse in 2025, following a minor line-tripping incident in January. In 2024 alone, the grid collapsed 12 times, adding to over 100 recorded collapses in the past decade.
