LAGOS — The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) says the Abuja–Kaduna passenger service will resume next week, following the completion of repairs and safety certifications on a damaged section of track at Asham.
In a statement on Saturday, NRC Chief Public Relations Officer Callistus Unyimadu said operations were halted after the August 26 incident, but engineers have since restored both infrastructure and rolling stock to “the highest safety standards” in line with global best practice.
Unyimadu added that the corporation has refunded 512 of the 583 passengers on board the affected train, with efforts ongoing to reach and process refunds for the remaining customers. “The NRC appreciates the patience and understanding of its esteemed passengers and assures the public that their safety, comfort, and satisfaction remain our top priority,” he said.
The corporation also acknowledged the support of the Federal Ministry of Transportation, security agencies, the media, and other stakeholders during the recovery period. Specific details on the official restart date and timetable will be released “in the coming days.”
The Abuja–Kaduna line is one of Nigeria’s busiest intercity rail corridors, serving commuters, business travelers, and families moving between the federal capital and the northwest. The forthcoming restart is expected to ease pressure on road transport, where travel times and costs have risen in recent weeks.
Passengers are advised to monitor NRC channels for final schedules, ticketing updates, and any temporary operational adjustments as services ramp back up.
