A fatal road accident on the busy Lekki-Epe Expressway has claimed six lives and left nine others injured, authorities confirmed on Monday.
According to eyewitnesses, the crash occurred after a commercial bus collided with a speeding vehicle in the early hours of the day. The impact caused severe damage to both vehicles and trapped several passengers inside.
Meanwhile, officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) and the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) quickly arrived at the scene. With their help, survivors were rescued and rushed to nearby hospitals for urgent medical attention. Unfortunately, six victims were confirmed dead at the scene.
In addition, security operatives have cordoned off the area to ease traffic congestion and ensure smooth rescue operations. Authorities revealed that preliminary investigations suggest overspeeding and reckless driving as possible causes of the accident.
As safety safety measures, officials urged drivers to obey traffic rules, reduce speed, and avoid dangerous overtaking, especially on highways such as Lekki-Epe, which is known for frequent accidents.
Furthermore, the Lagos State Government expressed sadness over the incident, extending condolences to the families of the deceased. Officials reassured the public that stricter enforcement of traffic regulations will continue in order to reduce accidents on the expressway.
As a result of this tragic event, safety experts are once again calling for increased road safety awareness campaigns. They emphasise that most crashes can be prevented if drivers adhere to speed limits and prioritise the safety of passengers.
