MOKWA, NIGER STATE — At least 21 bodies have been recovered and many more are missing after a devastating midnight flood struck Mokwa Local Government Area late Tuesday, following hours of torrential rainfall. The flood submerged over 50 residential homes, particularly in the Tiffin Maza and Anguwan Hausawa areas, catching residents and travelers completely off guard.
Several vehicles — including commercial buses and trucks — were swept away or trapped, as drivers and commuters scrambled to survive in rising waters. Rescue efforts were slow to mobilize, leaving locals to fend for themselves through the night. A woman and her two children, among the few rescued, are currently receiving medical attention at Mokwa General Hospital, along with other injured survivors.

The Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA) confirmed the extent of the destruction, stating: “Floodwaters submerged and washed away over 50 residential houses with their occupants… 21 bodies have so far been recovered. Search and rescue operations are ongoing.”
The flooding is the latest in a series of weather-related disasters to hit Nigeria’s flood-prone regions, where poor drainage, unregulated urban expansion, and climate change continue to worsen the impact of seasonal rainfall.
