Abuja — The Coalition Against Malpractices and Corruption (COMAC) has demanded a comprehensive transparency review of financial transactions and procurement activities at the Federal Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development, urging oversight bodies to tighten accountability in the sector.
Briefing journalists in Abuja on Tuesday, COMAC—an alliance of civil society groups including the Centre for Democracy and Human Rights (CEDEHUR), the Association of Media Practitioners in Oil and Gas Producing Areas (AMEPROGAS), and the Arewa Youth Alliance for Progress and Development—said it has filed Freedom of Information (FOI) requests seeking procurement records and contract documentation from the ministry.
“Our enquiries are aimed at promoting transparency in public spending and monitoring compliance with the Public Procurement Act, 2007,” COMAC convener Comrade Odey Otunu said. He stressed that the coalition has reached no conclusions pending an official response from the ministry.
COMAC said it will escalate the matter with formal petitions to the Presidency, National Assembly, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), the Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB), and the Police Special Fraud Unit.
“In furtherance of our democratic rights, we will stage peaceful marches and advocacy rallies to the National Assembly, EFCC, ICPC and other relevant institutions to press for transparent, independent investigations,” Otunu added.
If the FOI request remains unanswered, COMAC said it will seek judicial relief. “We shall not hesitate to approach the courts for an order of mandamus compelling compliance with the FOI Act,” the statement noted.
Reaffirming its commitment to openness and accountability, the coalition said its actions are rooted in constitutional and statutory provisions that mandate transparency in public administration. The Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development has yet to publicly respond to the coalition’s FOI request.
