The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Akeem Owoade, has refuted suggestions that he is locked in a supremacy contest with other traditional rulers, including the Ooni of Ife, Oba Enitan Ogunwusi.
In a statement released in Ibadan on Thursday by his Director of Media and Publicity, Bode Durojaiye, the monarch stressed that his primary concern is the wellbeing and development of his people, not rivalry.
The clarification follows media reports hinting at tension after the Ooni of Ife conferred the title Okanlomo of Oduwa on businessman Dotun Sanusi during the launch of the local social media app 2geda at Ilaji Hotel, Ibadan.
“The Alaafin does not need to engage in any battle for supremacy with any Oba, whether in Yorubaland or elsewhere,” the statement declared. “He is a steadfast custodian of Yoruba culture and tradition, always mindful of the safety and welfare of his subjects.”
According to the palace, Oba Owoade’s reign is driven by results, peace, and prosperity, with a strong commitment to preserving the cultural identity of Oyo and the wider Yoruba nation.
The statement also underscored his role as a unifying figure and guardian of Yoruba heritage, assuring that he will “continue strengthening the cultural legacy of the throne.”
Oba Owoade concluded by reaffirming his dedication to unity and collective progress, noting that his focus remains firmly on the future of his subjects rather than distractions from rivalry.
