What looked like another crushing blow in Manchester United’s turbulent season turned into one of the most jaw-dropping comebacks in European football history.
Trailing 6-4 on aggregate late in extra time and seemingly down and out, United pulled off a stunning turnaround at Old Trafford, scoring three goals in the final six minutes to snatch a 7-6 aggregate win over Lyon and secure a spot in the Europa League semifinals against Athletic Bilbao.
Former United defender Rio Ferdinand summed up the madness on TNT Sports: “I said in commentary, it’s going to take more than a miracle to get back in it. Now, I’m actually a believer because that was outrageous.”
After a 2-2 draw in Lyon last week, United surged ahead in the second leg with first-half goals from Manuel Ugarte and Diogo Dalot. Bruno Fernandes nearly added a third with a spectacular volley that crashed off the crossbar. But what seemed like a routine night quickly unraveled.
Lyon hit back with two quick goals from Corentin Tolisso and Nicolás Tagliafico, leveling the tie and shifting momentum. Tolisso’s sending off in extra time should have eased the pressure, but instead, United collapsed. Rayan Cherki fired Lyon ahead in the 104th minute, followed by Alexandre Lacazette’s penalty that put the French side 4-2 up on the night.
Then came the chaos.
Fernandes converted a penalty in the 114th minute to give United hope. Kobbie Mainoo leveled the aggregate score in the final minute of extra time, sending Old Trafford into a frenzy. Just as fans braced for penalties, Harry Maguire — playing as an emergency striker — rose to nod in the decisive goal in stoppage time.
“We gave everything and thanks to God we won this game … That was crazy,” said United defender Leny Yoro, still stunned by the dramatic finale.
Even manager Ruben Amorim seemed overwhelmed by the emotional rollercoaster: “I think that is why we like this sport so much. All the frustration that a coach has in this season, the bad moments – when you have moments like this, it is all worth it.”
United now turn their attention to a semifinal showdown with Athletic Bilbao on May 1. In the other Europa League semi, Tottenham will face off against Norwegian side Bodø/Glimt, who continue to defy expectations.
