The Super Eagles of Nigeria secured a crucial 2-0 victory over the Amavubi of Rwanda at the Amahoro Stadium in Kigali on Friday, boosting their 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign.
A brace from Victor Osimhen sealed the win, pushing Nigeria to fourth place in Group C with six points from five matches.
Under Coach Eric Chelle, the Eagles displayed defensive solidity, with Troost Ekong and Calvin Bassey forming a formidable partnership at the back, frustrating Rwanda’s attackers. Goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali remained largely untested.
The attacking quartet of Ademola Lookman, Moses Simon, Samuel Chukwueze, and Osimhen dazzled with their fluid combination play.
Osimhen’s first goal came from a volley off a Lookman cross, setting the tone for Nigeria’s dominance. His second strike, just before halftime, highlighted the team’s tactical versatility as they smoothly switched formations from 4-2-3-1 to 5-2-3, catching Rwanda off guard.
Osimhen’s 25th international goal capped off a blistering counterattack, leaving the Amavubi defense scrambling.
With this victory, Nigeria strengthens its bid to qualify for the 2026 World Cup, having previously appeared in six tournaments. Meanwhile, Rwanda continues its pursuit of a maiden World Cup appearance.
